FINALLY, more than three years in the making, TraillWorks.com has been redesigned and is now live! It's been quite a challenge over the past several years working with an outdated site and many designers who didn't quite get me. After much research, I decided to use a template site to help me construct and host, since I have little html knowledge.

There are still pages to complete and content to add and change, but after months of work, I wanted to share the new site. Now that it's hosted by Weebly.com, I will have the flexibility to update and change elements as my art develops.

So, take a look around, there's lots to see. What's new? I have a dedicated portfolio of my own work, including works in-progress, sketches and a page dedicated to commissions (still in design). There's a blog hosted directly on my site: www.traillworks.com/blog, but you can still link to my old blog on Blogger to see archived posts. The lesson page has been updated and most exciting of all; there is a shopping cart on my site and you can begin making purchases such as lessons and a new product: ARTaments.

In honor of the launch of the site, find the link to ARTaments on the site and share the page on Facebook or Twitter with #ARTaments. Each person who shares will receive $10 off their ARTament order. LEARN more about #ARTaments here.
For the first time in two years, I will be exhibiting my work! After moving to West Orange last August, setting up my studio in September, and then settling into a routine with my boys, I started exploring opportunities in the area. West Orange sits right next to Orange, a city that is experiencing a renaissance. Once a center of hat-making, it is now trying to pick itself up and revitalizing an urban area through the arts. TraillWorks: Studio on the 3rd Floor, is located just up the hill from this area now called the Valley Arts District. I'm still getting to know Valley Arts and all it offers. Click here for a great introduction of their initiatives by Patrick Morrissy, Executive Director of Hands, Inc.
I'm please and honored to be included in the inaugural juried exhibition, Open Orange, sponsored by the ValleyArts district of Orange and West Orange, NJ. This is my first juried show appearance and acceptance in a couple of years, and first exhibit opportunity in my new hometown. The exhibit was open to NJ artists and NY metropolitan area artists working in two-dimensional media. This contemporary art exhibition will be held in the new ValleyArts Firehouse Gallery and nearby spaces in the Valley Arts District and celebrates this growing artist community. The show runs from May 9th - June 8th.

We first became acquainted when I was accepted for a month-long residency in 2008. Over the course of those six years I've continued to be involved with the center in numerous ways when I ran TraillWorks in Newton, NJ.

Last year I was honored when director, Kristin Muller, invited me to teach a workshop during their summer session. Unfortunately circumstances didn't allow for it to run, but we are regrouping this year and I'm teaching "Painting the Texture of Tea" in August.

Tomorrow, Peters Valley is hosting their annual Studio Open House and Bevans Day Event. I will be traveling to Sussex County to paint and sell some of my work in the afternoon.

And, it wouldn't be a successful demo for me unless I could get the visitors involved. So, I am setting up a canvas, palette, and tea still life for the public during the day. You can stop by, mix a few colors you see in the still life and paint it onto the canvas. My hope is for a truly collaborative piece, added to by many people, that I can then contribute to the Peters Valley Annual Benefit Auction in August.

I just finished my first real painting since I closed up my gallery last year in April, and I'm truly giddy. I missed my lunch, I'm blogging, trying to use up every last second before I have to pick up my son at the sitter's.

I've been working on this off and on since last Wednesday; about three or four painting sessions, maybe a total of six hours. This piece was done with a sample set of oils by M. Graham, including only five colors: napthol red, azo yellow, ultramarine blue, phthalocyanine green and titanium white. I loved the consistency and color quality of these oils; buttery, dense, and bound with walnut oil something new I'm trying. I'll touch on this in a future post.

I began this piece with a quick colored pencil drawing, then started applying local color. I gradually built up more local color, thicker paint, and finally the brightest highlights and whites. The part I had the most trouble with was the tea bag. I began trying to replicate all of the highlights and text on the bag (it's a Stash tea bag), but it never seemed to work (my brushes are too thick) and the detail took away from the tea cup. I finally ended up destroying all of the detail on the bag by brushing over it with some of the creamy yellows from the mug. It felt good to make that very committed risk; the outcome is much better.

Can't wait to share more future paintings with you. But, in the meantime, I'll be submitting this work to the Annual Faculty and Studio Assistant Exhibition in the Sally D. Francisco Gallery from May 31- August 3, 2014 at Peters Valley Craft Center.

If you're interested in exploring painting tea and its paraphernalia, then consider joining me this summer for a three-day workshop, Painting The Texture of Tea, at Peters Valley in beautiful Sussex County, NJ. You can visit me and get a preview of the upcoming workshop during their annual Bevan's Day Open House on May 4th, where I will be painting throughout the afternoon. A Look Back . . . and Ahead.

I hate to say that it's been more than a year since my last blog post, but heck, I've been a bit busy. Unfortunately with our life in flux last year (selling and moving so quickly, closing my retail gallery and studio in Newton, having a baby, and now adjusting to life with two children) I never made a formal announcement about the birth of Auggie (pictured below). Considering all of our life changes, I've been on an extended maternity leave from my business.

This month I've found a part-time sitter for my youngest - five hours a week -which feels like an eternity of time! So, little by little, I am weaning from my maternity and settling in by painting some new pieces, preparing for an upcoming workshop, teaching some lessons, redesigning my marketing materials, and beginning a web redesign! I will be blogging more in the forthcoming year, but I'm home full-time with a 10-month old and my 5-year old when he is not in pre-k, so at this point I'm not ready to schedule a commitment.

Here's a brief visual overview of what I've been working on over the past year:
Both are one day workshops taught by teaching artists. These are great opportunities to explore a new medium or hone your skills / approach. And, we're partnering with the local Wooden Duck Bed & Breakfast, to offer you a discounted stay should you sign up for either workshop and want to make a weekend artist retreat out of it. If you reserve a room at the inn, you'll have an opportunity to save 10% on your workshop enrollment at TraillWorks!

The first workshop on Sunday, March 3rd, is Fabulous Flower Watercolors with Marilyn Rose, of West Caldwell, NJ. She is know for her fast and free approach and can be found in plein air events on the East Coast. I met Marilyn when she participated in our Paint Newton event last summer and have exhibited her works at TraillWorks since. She will definitely help you crawl out of your watercolor shell and find a renewed or new love for the medium.

The second workshop on Saturday, March 23rd, is Woodblock Printing with Amanda Gordon Miller, of Baltimore Maryland. Amanda and I attended Syracuse University together; she was a very talented painter. We didn't keep in touch, but about two years ago, I found her on Facebook and she has been exhibiting at the gallery since. Her work moved in the direction of printmaking when she had children, as a result of looking for a process she felt she could handle at home. She now is a resident artist in the Howard County Center for the Arts and teaches art and design at two community colleges in Maryland.
It's been a good year and TraillWorks has enjoyed offering artists of Sussex County figure drawing opportunities.

It is with mixed emotions that I share with you the news of TraillWorks' future. Over the past year, many changes have occurred in my personal life, from getting pregnant to the possibility of relocating our family. After much deliberation, we put our home in Newton for sale two weeks ago, and are now under contract. My husband commutes quite a distance to his job and we've decided to relocate to Maplewood, NJ, to enable a better quality of life for our family. With this decision means my transition from running the retail studio space in Newton, to working in a home studio for awhile once my baby is born in May.

The past seven years that I have been in business in Newton have been rich with experiences. I have met the most amazing people from very loyal customers, supportive business owners in the community, as well as many talented and special artists, many of whom are now friends. Opening up a retail space and gallery was never my intention or dream, but happened out of the necessity for studio space. What transpired has been truly remarkable. I am very proud of the space and services that I have developed and offer to the community, and will be sad to leave it and all of you. However, I'm very excited about the prospect of spending time with my new baby, more time with Joel and my husband, and getting back to the roots of my business - making my own art!

While this is the end of my involvement in Newton with my studio and gallery, I am embarking on the next step in my artistic career. Who knows where this will lead me, but I know good things are in store. In the meantime, our current exhibit is ending and what will probably be the final exhibit at TraillWorks, EVOLUTION, will be opening. Lessons are continuing through early April, as well as some workshops. There might be some changes to the schedule as I learn more about the closing date on our home and our moving plans. In the meantime, I have listed the studio and gallery for sale on Craigslist. On August 18th I put the finishing touches of varnish and officially signed the St. Joseph's mural. After a year and a half of work, my biggest project has been completed. Now, I'm excited to announce an official Mural Dedication which is set to take place on October 14th from 1 - 3pm at St. Joseph's Regional School in Newton.

The school is located at 20 Jefferson Street, but the mural is accessed by alleys on Halsted and Jefferson Street to the rear of the school. St. Joseph's is putting together a HarvestFest to celebrate the mural. They will be hosting a family-friendly event with a bounce house, pumpkin decorating, face painting, music, and carnival games.

I hope you'll join me in this very special day! Our current exhibit speaks to the expanding importance of the landscape genre and the growing desire artists have to document the environment. Through unique, personal visions, ten artists bring the outside world into the gallery space. While many of the works are oil paintings, some explore bridging traditional media like combining watercolor, oil and collage in one work. Some of the works feature luminescent portrayals of Main Street America; some expressive depictions of urban cities; others explore wide vistas and dramatic storm systems. Artists from New Jersey, New York, Maryland, Texas and Massachusetts will have their work on display at TraillWorks through August 19th.

We'd like to thank all who attended our opening reception on July 14th. Special thanks to The Alternative Press for their coverage of the show and "Paint Newton", held on the same day. We'd also like to extend our gratitude to The Plaza Restaurant for their delicious sandwiches, cavatelli and broccoli, and paella they offered as "Art Partner" to the exhibit. The Mediterranean influenced restaurant is located at 118 Spring Street and offers breakfast, lunch and dinner.

For more information about the exhibit and the artists featured, visit the current events page of our web site.

Last Saturday TraillWorks was host to artists from around the state who came to set up easels on Spring Street and "Paint Newton." The weather held for a great day of plein air painting, despite the heat. Though in our inaugural event 13 artists registered, we had a total of six actually attend. One of our artists, David Ohlerking, was stranded in Philadelphia with a broken windshield and was unfortunately not able to attend.

The Grand Prize was juried by me and awarded to Marilyn Rose of West Caldwell, NJ, for her watercolor paintings of Newton. Best Student / Amateur Artist went to Alison Tuday, of Bernardsville, NJ. A student of David Ohlerking, Alison's vibrant works were mainly painted with her fingers. The People's Choice award went to Cole Longcor, and young budding artist from Sussex County. And finally, from the ballots entered in the People's Choice contest, a random voter was selected to win an artist's proof of one of my giclées. Congrats to Doug DeWitte of Newton for being drawn.

Murals have been on my mind. I was commissioned last April by St. Joseph's Regional School in Newton, NJ to complete a mural to complete a play-scape transformation project. My surface - a 40' x 15' cinder block wall pierced with windows. When I first viewed the walls, I thought wow, that is huge. I've never worked that large, let alone outside. Fear of the unknown crept in slowly and I fought back with a determination to successfully execute this project.
I spent a summer in college interning at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and was exposed to their very successful Mural Arts Program. Every corner you turn in Philly, a wall is elaborately finished with amazing images painted by artists. This was my opportunity to understand and work on a grand scale.

I took the commission which has taken about a year to design. No, I have not worked on it every day for a year, but in juggling my other projects and teaching, it took a year to come up with an initial idea, and then go through the revision process. Last June I spent two sessions working with selected students in brainstorming ideas. I took some of their ideas. along with my own to present an initial design that incorporated both scripture and elements of the school day. The schema I came up with breaks the wall into a series of stained glass windows, turning the outside into a church-like environment, giving the feeling you are outside and inside a Gothic cathedral at the same time. Ultimately, the committee felt I needed to go purely in the religious direction, so I came up with an illustration depicting 9 bible verses selected by the priest of St. Jo's, Father Brian Sullivan. The windows start with Creation and end with the Resurrection / Ascension.
At the end of March, my current design was approved and then I waited for the warm weather to return. I picked up two sets of 5' scaffolding with my parent liaison, Jessie Martin, and her 70 year old mother who lent us her pickup truck and instructed me on putting it together and scaling it! Truly humbling to watch Jessie's mother climb all over the scaffolding as if she had been born on it.
I'm using a process that I researched thoroughly over the past year; projecting my image with an Art Prism and drawing the outlines with Montana Hardcore markers. This work required darkness for the image to successfully show on the wall so I spent about six, warm and dry weather evenings in April and May from 8:15 through 10 and 11pm drawing the design with a parent buddy, students, and my son and husband keeping me company. Numerous evenings Joel, my son, would cry because he had to go to bed and couldn't come to the mural. It was really special to have him see me work on this project and be so interested.
As of May 10th I finally began the painting. I'm using custom mixed acrylics special ordered from Golden Acrylics in New York state. They make amazing paints - this is my first time using them and I'm super impressed by the coverage, color, and texture of the paints. After I got into the project, I remembered learning about their use for mural work from my time at Pearl Paint. In about a week from ordering at Jerry's Artists' Outlet in West Orange, I had 5 gallons of artists acrylic. I'm using colors suggested by Marshall Okin at Jerry's - manganese blue, pyrole red, hansa yellow medium, bone black, and titanium white - all rated for permanence. The colors are really impressive on the wall.
I'm only working on the 2nd of the 9 windows and am hoping to complete any scaffolding work by the beginning of June. However, now that I see how long I am spending on each window, I probably have a good 70 hours worth of work ahead of me; which I'm fitting in around my retail hours at the gallery, my teaching schedule, and picking up my son from daycare. 4th Annual Student Exhibit, a set on Flickr.

Whew! TraillWorks just held it's 4th Annual Student Exhibition opening reception this past Saturday. It was a great success! Thank you to all of the talented students who participated and the support of all of their parents, family and friends. While I have several adult students, the exhibit happens to fall during Youth Art Month, a national annual observance
each March to emphasize the value of K-12 art education for all children
and to encourage support for quality school art programs.

The gallery and studios were buzzing with artists and their guests. Even the NJ Herald sent a photographer - we got an excellent photo spread in this Monday's paper.

During the reception, students had an opportunity to work with their friends and family in drawing a collective 5- Line Portrait. This was inspired by my reading of Daniel Pink's A Whole New Mind in which he mention's a great activity to utilize the right brain. He learned this technique from a Betty Edward's workshop, the author of Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. It was amazing to see each person's portrayal of themselves, using only 5 lines and how everyone, regardless of talent was able to accomplish it. Each rendering looked like the artist!

Participating students also had to submit artistically-presented snacks for the reception. The submissions were outstanding this year and twice we had to break a tie for the winners. I'm pleased to announce, 1st place went to Miles Shaw for his tree cake, depicting a watercolor he created; 2nd place went to Will Somma for his Picasso-inspired self-portrait cake; 3rd place went to Carin Cali for her flowers in the grass fruit tray; and a prize was awarded to Amanda Canova for voting in the contest.

Congratulations to all of the winners of the food contest and more importantly, to all of the students who have developed their work with me over the past year. My students should all get a pat on the back for the hard work they have shown. I'd also like to commend, Alyse DiBlasio, Assistant Curator, Marketer and Developer, for her successful curatiing of the exhibit, and Kassandra Talmadge, Graphic Designer and Sales Associate, for her help in developing all of the promotional materials.

If you have not had a chance to stop in the exhibit, it runs through April 1st. Please come and support the many student artists at TraillWorks.

This Saturday TraillWorks is hosting a reception for my exhibit, "Jennie Traill Schaeffer: Regrouped" a mini-retrospective of my work from the past ten years. From 5 - 8pm join us at the gallery for conversation, eats, and some painting demonstrations.

This exhibit is not only a great chance to see a wide range of my work, but also an opportunity to help support a cause and purchase at special prices (10% donation and 10% off the listed prices). Since I began selling my work I've found an annual cause to donate a portion of my sales. Last year I was able to support more than one cause through the gallery: Friend 2 Friend, Birth Haven, and Turn the Towns Teal, Inc., as well as local school tricky trays.

Throughout the run of this exhibit I will be making a donation from sales of my work directly to Dr. Valerie Rusch's lung cancer research at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. She performed my mother-in-law's successful surgery to remove her lung cancer last year. My family is very grateful for the treatment she received both from her surgeon and Sloan-Kettering, and I'm thrilled I will be able to support Dr. Rusch's research.

I've been very touched by the many visitors to the gallery with stories of both loss and life, related to lung cancer. The common theme among all of the visitors was that lung cancer is not as well-funded or researched as some of the other cancers. I lost my grandmother, Clarice Schaeffer, when I turned 13 to lung cancer. She lived at the time in Syracuse, NY, and was diagnosed with cancer from asbestos exposure from an office building she worked in during WWII. We believe she had mesothelioma; she lived for about 2 - 3 years on oxygen, lost function in one lung and eventually passed away from suffocation. Her passing at that point in my life left a big impact on me.

I hope that I can help raise money through this exhibit to keep all of our loved ones healthier and around longer.

Via Flickr:
Exhibit runs January 14th through February 28th, 2012. The ten year retrospective of Jennie Traill Schaeffer's work is on exhibit at TraillWorks in Newton, NJ, and is benefiting Lung Cancer Research.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00621528556632046660noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5805226695499721687.post-48555536799927323412012-01-30T08:25:00.001-05:002012-01-30T08:26:38.893-05:00Figure Drawing Comes to Sussex County, NJ

Figure drawing is making its inaugural appearance at TraillWorks,
by way of open studios, beginning tomorrow night! Come get your draw on
for the only open figure drawing sessions in Sussex County, NJ. It's
been two-years in the making since I've thought about offering figure
drawing studios in Newton. Finally it has come to fruition due to a
number of things. First, over a year ago I got a solicitation via email
from a prospective model. Then a friend was interested in teaching a
workshop - we held two with said model. Finally we saw a population
wanting this opportunity, a trustworthy good model was found, and my
friend was interested in moderating sessions.

Then
my progress forward slowed when my friend could no longer moderate due
to work constraints. At the same time, I got tripped up on some
questions with insurance and dealing with models. I was hoping to begin
all of this in the beginning of January, but the phone calls and
coordination between many parties has truly taken a month. It is no
small feet to get a new program up and running. All is in place, so see
below to learn about the details.

So,
without further adieu, we will begin our weekly figure drawing sessions
tomorrow. We've worked out some great options for attending, such as
paying weekly or buying flex-sessions up front. Also we've set up a
reward system to earn a free session for every 10 you attend. Sessions
will run from 7 - 9:30pm every Tuesday. Tomorrow's model is Jim Carvalho, a professional model who has been great to work with. If you'd like to register or learn more, visit our Eventbrite page.

are still looking for models, especially women, to add to our roster.

I'm pleased to announce the release of a new limited edition giclée featuring one of my most-loved recent paintings, Homage to Julia. Painted in 2009, around the time of the film, Julie and Julia, I wanted to learn more about Julia Child and was deeply impressed by her success in the professional kitchen, then a male-dominated arena.

After doing some research mostly through the Smithsonian's fabulous virtual tour of her kitchen, I composed this painting. Using her Kitchen-Aid stand mixer as a metaphor for Child, I pulled colors and other elements from her kitchen, incorporating the french whisk, a tool she introduced to American cooks.

This painting actually evolved after a clipping from the newspaper was stuck in my studio door by my friend, Linda Hirsch. The clipping was Julia's recipe for French omelettes, along with a column encouraging Americans to get rid of their egg beaters. Child both loved tools that worked, whether old or new. She embraced technology when it worked well. She loved her mixing machine. I felt it was appropriate to collage both of these clippings into the painting.

The original painting sold last year and is now in a private collection in New Jersey. I've had many people express interest in the painting, so now you have an opportunity to own a canvas reproduction.

To celebrate the release of the giclée, I'm offering them now through Christmas* at 10% off the retail price of $125. The 14" x 14" giclée is printed on Fredrix canvas with archival inks and coated with a satin UV-resistant finish. Only 75 will be printed. They will be stretched on 1.25" deep stretcher bars. The wrap of the canvas around the stretchers will be left white. For an additional $20, the canvas wrap can be painted gold. The giclée may be left unframed for a contemporary look, or framed for an additional cost.

The holidays come around every year too quickly for me, and now having a toddler and a retail gallery, every one's birthdays, my anniversary and multiple religious celebrations, it sometimes seems too much. But, I want to switch gears from the usual grumble of the holidays and express my gratitude for so many people in my life and for the ability to celebrate to many people in my life for the next month.

I have been surrounded by the most supportive people throughout my life and most importantly, I am so grateful to my husband for his unending confidence in my business and in me as a mother. He is my best friend, and as I've heard stories of families being apart for the holidays - I am fortunate to spend mine with my entire family. My son, the joy of my life, brings me unending love, hugs and kisses. He reminds me to stay young, and I believe he makes me more creative. My parents and sister, all artists in their own right, have been by my side as TraillWorks has grown from my bedroom studio in my home almost 7 years ago! I also have the most supportive in-laws, who continue to encourage and help in numerous ways.

Pass the tissues! This coming Saturday, TraillWorks will be hosting a screening of the film, Who Does She Think She Is? by Academy Award winning director, Pamela Tanner Boll. I saw this film with artist, Martha C. Hall, earlier this year at the Morris Museum and knew that I had to share it with you at my gallery. I bought the DVD from Amazon within the week and starting planning this screening.

The documentary film follows five female artists who are all mothers and examines the pressures of following their passions and careers while balancing their individual family lives. When I discovered this film almost a year ago, prior to seeing it, I had already had my son, Joel, and was furiously juggling caring for him, running a household, running an art business, and making my own work. I found this film to be profoundly inspiring both spiritually and artistically, as well as an amazing stimulus of passion.

Please join us at 8pm on Saturday, October 22nd for a moving and intimate look at how five women choose both their art and their children. Following the screening, three artists (Amy S. Brooks, Joann Wells Greenbaum, and myself) will sit for a panel discussion offering a look at their own experiences mothering and art making.

Amy S. Brooks is the owner of Paradise Stained Glass of Metuchen, NJ and is the mother of two teenage sons. Joann Wells Greenbaum, now an empty-nester, is a successful independent artist from Shohola, PA, a mother of two grown sons. Admission to the film is by donation. All donations will be going to support Birth Haven, a local 501(c)3 that provides shelter and hope to young pregnant mothers. Just before the film starts, the director of Birth Haven will present a brief overview video of the opportunities and love that the organization provides to its residents. I felt this was a fitting charity to extend support to given the hard choices that both the artists in the film and the residents of Birth Haven have to make to pursue a better life.

Since I studied in Florence during art school and had the chance to visit again in 2007, my husband and I decided after the wedding festivities were over we would visit somewhere outside of Italy. The original plan was to visit Provence for a week, but a variety of things caused us to switch gears, mostly due to having a little less time than previously imagined.

Instead we spend four days located in Monaco, with one day set aside for a trip to Aix-en-Provence. Though I could have spent a week or more relaxing in Monaco, I'm utterly grateful for our brief introduction to Aix and the chance to visit artist, Paul Cézanne's studio.

I've loved the artist's work since seeing a show of his at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and I now reference his work over and over again to my students. Considered by most scholars to be the harbinger of modernism, Picasso called Cézanne, “My one and only master. … Cézanne was like the father of us all.” It was Cezanne who started breaking down space and playing with perspective more abstractly. Our docent showed us the ladder that reaches almost to the ceiling in the studio; it was on this that Cezanne would climb to get different vantage points of his still lives in order to paint a variety of views in one piece.

Cezanne's Studio, from Atelier Cezanne

We trekked all over Aix and wound our way to the northern part of the city, where the Atelier Cezanne is located. It's a beautiful building, located up a hill, that once was a solitary structure. Our docent told us the trees were quite short and Cezanne would have had quite a view from which to paint in his backyard. Now, that part of the city is filled in with apartment buildings, homes and the trees have grown in significantly.

When Cezanne passed away in 1906, his friend, Emile Bernard, moved into the studio, occupying the first floor and leaving the second floor where Cezanne worked alone. In 1921, Marcel Provence purchased the studio from Paul's son and maintained the space to preserve Cezanne's heritage. In 1954 when developers wanted to raise the building to make way for apartments, 2 American students gathered 150 investors to buy the property from Provence's heirs and pass on the property to the University of Aix-Marseille. In 1969, the city of Aix took on ownership of the studio.

Cezanne's Studio, from Atelier Cezanne

As a painter, I was pretty amazed to not only see his studio intact, but to walk around and identify objects that I've seen in his paintings - in particular a plaster cast of Cupid. Another compelling aspect was a slot that the artist had designed into the wall, about 10' or so tall and about a foot wide, with a door leading out into his back gardens. The docent relayed how Cezanne used the passage way to port his large works in and out of the studio - for ease as well as to paint portions of a painting, such as the many bathers, outside.

It was my husband, Lee, who suggested I sketch some of the studio while we were there. (I have the most fabulous husband!) So I spent about 30 minutes sketching the cupid and a still life setup on Cezanne's table. While I was working, one of the docents suggested to Lee that we walk up the Avenue Paul Cezanne another 15 minutes to Mont Sainte-Victoire, the limestone landmark made famous by Cezanne's numerous depictions in watercolor and oil. At the top of the hill, the city of Aix designated a portion of land, terrain des peintres, or painters' ground, where Cezanne often painted the mountain. Of course, we walked up the road to the hallowed ground of Cezanne and I sat down for a quick watercolor study. While I painted, Lee took dozens of photos of Mont Sainte-Victoire and me painting.

Though our time in Aix was brief, in about eight hours I learned a great deal about Cezanne, soaked in the city, and got an appreciation for Cezanne's landscapes.

Every September I have supported efforts to raise awareness of the symptoms of ovarian cancer. Prompted in 2007, a while after my mom's very good college friend, Barbara Salamy, passed away after battling ovarian cancer, I hosted an open studio at my home with a percentage of proceeds benefiting Kaleidoscope for Hope.

Eventually I got more involved by helping to "Teal" Newton about three years ago. Last year and this year I have organized the "Tealing" of Newton and held special exhibits and made donations to Turn the Towns Teal, Inc. the 501(c)(3) that ties teal ribbons in towns throughout the country every September to raise awareness of ovarian cancer symptoms. The reason for the campaign is due to the lack of early detection screening tests, so too frequently, ovarian cancer is discovered at late stages when the chance of recovery decreases significantly.

This September, I've asked all of the artists at TraillWorks to donate a portion of retail sales to Turn the Towns Teal, Inc. I was overwhelmed by the participation I received. Below is a list of artists who have agreed to share a 10% donation with me on all gallery sales during the month of September. If you've had your eye on something, now is a great time to purchase knowing that a portion of your sale is going to help more women learn when to seek medical care and thereby save more lives.

Having a child and a business really does speed up life, even while I'm trying my best to focus on the now. The months of July and August have been very productive and full at TraillWorks from art lessons, commissions, creating my own artwork, and hosting events.

Several posts ago, I wrote about a big mural commission that I had taken on for a local private school. It is in progress, though it is not as progressed as I would have expected at this point. But, I'm thrilled with where it is going and I've needed the time. I've ended up working on about a window a week - the creation aspect is the hardest, not necessarily the execution of the mural. Some of the images are pulled directly from student drawings, but most are mine that were developed after working with the students, learning about their school, and then going to the drawing board in my studio. I've been in constant touch with a parent at the school and thus far she is thrilled with what I've done.

The mural is comprised of nine windows, coincidentally, just as many grades are in the school. The school desired the incorporation of Noah's Ark, the Resurrection and the Ascension. From there I worked with several of the students to spark other ideas about their school. The school's mission, academic subjects and the idea of God in all things drove the rest of the mural.

I decided to label the windows with numbers to symbolize each grade in the school. The overall composition is carried visually by a prop plane, drawn by one of the students, pulling a banner with the school's mission through the windows. The mural is somewhat narrative and chronological in that it begins in Kindergarten with the Flood and the animals embarking on New Jersey and ends in window 9, with the Ascension of Christ, handing over a mortar board to an 8th grader.

I'm reaching the finished state of the design and am striving to complete it before school begins in September. The next big step is determining how I will transfer these large drawings onto the exterior of the school. I believe I have two options: grid the entire drawing by hand, or use a projector at night. Any and all suggestions are welcome!

Karin Lowney-Seed is this month's [TraillWorks Artist to Follow]. Her work is on exhibit at TraillWorks through the end of the summer. Karin is a contemporary painter and interior designer who likes to use bold colors and shapes in her pieces. She uses words, flowers, collages, and a bright color palette to show her eye for beauty. When Jennie asked me to interview Karin I was especially excited about the opportunity. Karin was my professor at the County College of Morris during this past Spring Semester. To say that she was an inspiration would be an understatement. Karin helped our class look at art work and the art world in a different way. It was a great experience to be able to have a conversation with her outside of the classroom.

Ashley: You recently had a faux opening at TraillWorks to film the pilot for a new TV reality show. How did that get started and what will the show be about?

Karin Lowney-Seed: I was approached 8 months ago to film a pilot about my life and what I do. I've been doing interior design for years. I help clients in all aspects of life and guide them in the right direction. I was on another reality show on TLC and they wanted to explore that.

Ashley: What's the progress and when or where will it be available for viewing?

Karin Lowney-Seed: The working title is "Karin Clothes to Home" and it is in the preview stage right now. It will then go into editing in around September or November. So we won't know anything until the end of editing which should be sometime in the fall.

Ashley: How did you know you were meant to be an artist?

Karin Lowney-Seed: I have always been driven by anything creative. It's what gets me up and going. I'm never bored. It's a passion that won't go away.

Ashley: I heard you had an exhibit in Alaska with your sister. How was that? And what is your sister's medium of choice?

Karin Lowney-Seed: It was a great experience. The biggest challenge was getting the work up there and the expense. [My sister] is a sculptor. We were working together helping each other on our projects. I also put together some collages up there.

Ashley: Other than your sister and yourself, are there any other artists in your family?

Karin Lowney-Seed: My father actually was a sculptor and painter. But children and life kind of took him away from it.

Ashley: What artists inspire you?

Karin Lowney-Seed: Every artist inspires me. I am inspired by anybody why thinks outside the box. I am inspired by the classics like Matisse and Picasso. Also Robert Motherwell. There are too many to name.

Ashley: What is your process when beginning a painting? Is it spontaneous, planned, or a little bit of both?

Karin Lowney-Seed: Both, definitely both. I have a tendency to work tight and loose. If I work too tight it comes out too controlled. If I work too loose it's not controlled enough. I try to find a balance between the two.

Ashley: What got you started painting the roses? Do you have a favorite?

Karin Lowney-Seed: I always have a favorite and then the next one I create becomes the favorite. I've done these [circular flower patterns] for over 30 years in my work. It started out that I was working on something and felt instead of it being a part of the [background of the painting] it should be the [subject of the] painting.

Karin Lowney-Seed: Absolutely. For me...I couldn't see a landscape and abstract it [in my mind]. It wasn't my thing. In Florida I was on the beach and wanted to be able to paint the water in a different way. I decided to write what I saw. I did 25 to 30 sketches and then I got it. I knew what I had to do.

Ashley: Do you create your collages around a single word within the piece?

Karin Lowney-Seed: No, I usually create them, see where they're going...they're thematic...poetic. They take on a poetic sense. Once they're done a word pops out and that's the only word it could be.

Ashley: How do you decide whether to do a collage or a painting to express your ideas?

Karin Lowney-Seed: I wouldn't say "decide"...it's usually where I am in the process of thinking. Collages come from wondering where to go next. I'm not going to paint the same thing over and over. A collage will be the in between stage. I use collages to problem solve.

Ashley: What are you reading right now?

Karin Lowney-Seed: One thing that's interesting...my world between interior design and fine arts had collided. I'm interested to see what's happened between the two. What's happening in the art...the materials and how I see things have become one with my interior designs.
